Exercise: Your Secret Weapon Against Heart Disease

The Heart Disease Epidemic in Australia

Did you know that approximately 1.3 million Australians aged 18 and over are living with heart, stroke, or vascular disease? That’s nearly 7% of the adult population, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics' 2022 survey. But here’s the good news: cardiovascular disease is one of the most preventable health issues, and the secret weapon to fight it? Exercise!

Why Exercise Matters for Your Heart

The Australian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, five days a week. This should also include two days of resistance training. But why exactly is exercise so important for heart health?

Regular exercise is about more than just looking good—it’s about feeling good and keeping your heart, blood vessels, and overall health in peak condition. And the best part? You don’t need to be running marathons or doing intense workouts to reap the benefits. Activities like walking, cycling, dancing, or even housework and gardening count as moderate physical activity!

Exercise Doesn't Have to Be Intense

We’ve often been conditioned to think of exercise as something that leaves you breathless and sweaty. While that’s one way to get moving, the truth is that any form of movement is better than none at all. The key is finding something you enjoy and making it part of your daily routine.

Imagine if you could feel as motivated to move your body every day as you do to brush your teeth. It doesn’t have to be a chore! Consistency is key—the more you move, the better you’ll feel physically, mentally, and emotionally.
