Once you’ve registered with My Aged Care, you’ll be scheduled for an assessment by either the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) or the Regional Assessment Service (RAS), depending on the type of care you need. This assessment is an important step to determine the right level of support for you, whether you’re at home or in the hospital. It can take place either in person at your home or over the phone, making it convenient and accessible.
What to Expect During Your Assessment
During the assessment, the ACAT or RAS assessor will ask you questions to get a clear understanding of your health, daily activities, and personal care needs. Their goal is to figure out how much support you require and what kind of services would best suit your situation. This might include options like Home Care Packages, the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), respite care, short-term care or even residential aged care if needed.
How to Prepare for Your Assessment
To prepare for the assessment, think about the areas in your daily life where you need extra help—whether it’s with mobility, personal care, household tasks or social support. It’s also a good idea to have any relevant medical information handy, as it can help provide a clearer picture of your needs.
After the assessment, you’ll receive a letter outlining the outcome. This letter will tell you what level of support you’re eligible for, including your assigned Home Care Package level if applicable. It will also let you know your priority status for receiving the package and an estimated wait time. This information will help you plan your care and ensure you get the support you need when you need it.
Choosing a Service Provider
If you're eligible for a Home Care Package or other services, you'll need to choose a service provider. My Aged Care offers a list of approved providers in your area. You can compare them based on the services they offer, their availability, and costs. Some providers may offer additional services or support, so it’s worth considering what suits your needs best.
