Ian’s Journey to Fitness: Finding Motivation Through Exercise

After COVID disrupted his regular gym routine, Ian found himself struggling with his fitness. Like many others, the pandemic had a significant impact on his physical and mental wellbeing

“I needed something to change my mindset and get me back into regular exercise,” Ian explained

When he spotted Burnie Brae’s “Move for Mental Health” activity, he knew it was the perfect opportunity to kickstart his journey back to fitness.

A Game-Changer: The Move for Mental Health Class

The session, led by our expert Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists from Healthy Connections, turned out to be exactly what Ian needed. It was a refreshing change from the typical fitness classes he had done before. The class included a mix of balance exercises, yoga, Pilates and strength training using resistance bands, all of which were easy to follow, but the real highlight was the mindfulness aspect.

“The exercises were great, but what really stood out for me was the mindfulness at the end of the session. I never realised how important it is to relax and listen to your body,” Ian shared

This focus on mental wellness was something Ian hadn’t expected but found to be incredibly beneficial for both his body and mind.

An Invitation to Men: Let’s Get Moving!

One thing that Ian couldn’t help but notice was the lack of male participants.

“There were only three of us men in a group of about 20 women,” Ian remarked.

But Ian has a message for all the men out there

“Guys, it’s just an hour out of your day, and it could be the start of a healthier and happier life for you. Don’t let the women have all the fun!”

He hopes more men will take the opportunity to join and experience the positive benefits of exercise, both physically and mentally.

Taking it Further: Continuing the Journey at Healthy Connections

Since attending the “Move for Mental Health” session, Ian has taken his fitness journey a step further by incorporating regular exercise into his routine at Healthy Connections

“I’m so happy to be back on track with regular exercise,” Ian says, feeling stronger, more focused, and with a renewed sense of motivation.

The experience at Burnie Brae not only helped him regain his physical strength but also gave him the mental clarity he was seeking.

Why Exercise is Key to Mental Health

For Ian, the session proved that exercise isn’t just about physical health—it plays a huge role in mental well-being too. Through the right combination of physical activity and mindfulness, Ian has found a balanced approach to staying fit and positive. Exercise has helped him not only get back on track physically but also improve his focus, motivation and overall happiness.
