International Women's Day

Celebrating Inspiring Women Around Us

On the 8th of March, we celebrate International Women’s Day, a day to honor the incredible women who make a positive difference in our lives. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” focuses on empowering women and supporting their advancement in every aspect of life.

One such inspiring woman is Dr. Phyllis Artiss, a Burnie Brae Member whose career as a professor, social justice advocate and community leader has touched countless lives.

Commitment to Social Justice

Throughout her life Dr. Phyllis Artiss was an educator, activist and social justice advocate whose impact spanned over four decades. After retiring from Memorial University in 2002, Phyllis’s contributions continued to resonate within the university and the broader community. In 2013, she was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for her tireless work in education and advocacy for women and minorities.

Phyllis’s quiet leadership was central to her efforts to foster social change. She played a key role in establishing Marguerite’s Place, a resource for women in need, and worked with organiaations like Oxfam and the Native Friendship Centre to empower marginalized groups, particularly Aboriginal women. Her academic work, including pioneering courses in Women’s Studies, inspired generations of students to engage in social justice causes.

Phyllis’s influence extended beyond formal roles, as she continued to contribute to global movements and local initiatives. Her legacy is defined by her steadfast commitment to justice, equality, and quiet leadership that left a lasting impact on the communities she served.

Journey to Personal Wellness

After the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Phyllis set a personal goal to return to swimming, demonstrating that the spirit of perseverance can inspire others. She now attends weekly hydrotherapy sessions with a Physiotherapist from Healthy Connections, gradually working her way back to full health. Her dedication has not only helped her regain strength but also inspired others to pursue their own health goals.

As one of her fellow swimmers put it, “She is such an inspiration. It has been a pleasure to watch her get in the pool every week and swim laps. It helps me to keep getting in the pool every week and do my exercises in the hope I can return to swimming.”

In addition to her commitment to physical wellness, Phyllis also attends Burnie Brae’s Club Respite for social activities and outings, where she continues to engage with the community, further enriching her life and the lives of those around her. Her story serves as an example of how staying connected and active - physically, mentally, and socially - can lead to a healthier, more fulfilling life.
