Lance’s Olympic Legacy

During his regular exercise session at Healthy Connections, Lance shared his unique connection to the Olympics. Although he never competed in the Games, Lance was involved in the 1956 Olympic Torch Relay.

At just under 16 years old and living in the small town of Isisford, Lance had the extraordinary opportunity to be part of this historic event. His relay leg took him to Roots Bridge, south of Rockhampton, where he carried the torch across the Tropic of Capricorn.

“I spent two hours just waving at every passing car,” Lance recalled with a smile.

During this memorable experience, Lance received a valuable piece of advice from Frank Moran, a photographer with the Morning Bulletin. Moran told him, “When you run past the sign (Tropic of Capricorn), put your hand up in the air like this.”

When the time came to carry the torch, two Army personnel were on hand to guide Lance. They instructed him to keep the torch held high and to move swiftly to prevent any issues with the flame.

“Focus was crucial. If the torch became too heavy, I’d just switch hands,” Lance said, recalling the responsibility he felt.

After completing his mile, Lance returned to his everyday life, resuming his school routine as if nothing had changed. His parents only discovered his involvement in the Olympic Relay when they heard about it on ABC news.
